While mutations are common in viruses, the spread of new COVID-19 variants are increasing in an alarming rate. Few of these strains are spreading fast and can be life threatening.
B.1.1.7 or also called as UK variant spread faster in late 2020 than the infecting strain. Research suggested that this strain will likely have higher infection ability. Another variant with similar mutations that was found in New York (B.1.526) similar with the variants identified in South Africa (B.1.351) and Brazil (B188.8.131.52). These variants are less contagious compared to the UK variant.
Although vaccines are available, it is advisable to take the necessary precautions and keep the variants away!
